Growing, Changing, and Developing at Lurie Children's with Jaclyn Diaferio
Being All for your One isn't just a catchy slogan, it’s a way of life for us at Lurie Children's. It means each and every employee is dedicated to our patients, their families, and providing the highest quality of care for those in need. It means hiring only the best employees; those with a yearning to grow, a passion for what they do, and a willingness to step up when their team needs them.
In the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), this rings true for the entire team. No matter how busy it gets, each member of the team–from doctors to nurses to administrative staff–works to provide quality care to each patient they see.
Jaclyn Diaferio, a Certified Nursing Assistant in the CICU, loves the craziness that comes with each day. As a CNA, Jaclyn cares for sick babies while also providing extra support for the nurses on the floor–something she says takes compassion and positivity. However, her favorite part of the job is working with patients and their families, ensuring them that they aren’t going through this hardship alone. And on the Lurie Children's team, our employees don’t have to go through things alone either.
"We work together as a team, and the team is young and ready to learn a lot. I've been a CNA for 7 years now and I know a lot, so I like being able to pass knowledge along to new members on our team. It’s cool to be able to work as a team, regardless of whether you’re a nurse or a CNA. Everyone on the team is respectful and they ask questions, which is great because I'm here to help."
Having a strong team is vital to every part of the job, and what makes the nursing team at Lurie Children's so strong is having each other’s back.
"I once had the entire floor, all 44 beds to myself. I’m the type of person that’s really motivated and doesn’t leave until I get the job done. I remember my team asking what they can do to help and doing everything needed to help me complete the job, they even brought me lunch because I didn’t get an opportunity to grab anything to eat. Everyone was so supportive."
That wasn't the first time that the team at Lurie Children's saw how strong Jaclyn's work ethic is. As someone who is passionate about working with children, and who doesn’t give up until they've gotten what they want, she tried for 5 years to get on the team. Once she made it on, she was ready to work her way up and develop her career as part of the Lurie Children's family.
"It's really funny because the managers we have right now want us to continue up the ladder. It's amazing to see because they push me, even the doctors I've never worked alongside doctors before, pushed me into nursing school because he saw how professional I am and how I interact with patients and families. As someone working her way up, Jaclyn has some career advice for those just getting started:
Always keep an open mind and stay positive. You're going to have days that are really hard, but always stay open minded and positive. For a CNA, you have to be motivated. You have to want to do the job and be wholeheartedly in it. For a nurse, you have to have compassion and do the job for the patient and not for anything else. A job's a job, but this is a different kind of job, you really have to want it."
